Harry Shapland

A symbolic figure of golf course architecture

Harry Shapland Colt, born in 1869 in Highgate in England, is considered as one of the best architects of his era. A true pioneer in this domain, he is the “true father of golf course architecture. His knowledge of the game, vision and endearment for the countryside have allowed him to create highly distinguished courses which have been through times everywhere in the world. The list of his creations constitutes an honour list…” according to the famous golf architect Donald Steel.

After graduating from the Law School of the University of Cambridge, and being an accomplished athlete, it was normal to resort to his first passion: golfing, and to participate in the conception of the Rye practice in 1985. He became the honorary secretary before being elected, in 1901, the new secretary of the Sunningdale club.

During his brilliant career, Harry Colt remodelled more than 300 courses and changed 115 more while constantly aiming at preferring the strategy rather than the “discipline”. His design principles, based on the natural aesthetics of the sites, led him to design the Old Course Golf Club of Cannes-Mandelieu in 1923 on a site ideal for this project, among huge centennial pine umbrellas.

Harry Colt passed away on the 21st of November 1951, at the age of 82.
